BYD TECHNOLOGY

PLUG-IN HYBRID
ELECTRIC VEHICLES

BYD Dual Mode Technology combines the instant torque of an electric motor with the long-range capability of a petrol engine - always prioritising electric drive for daily use, with petrol seamlessly extending range whenever you need it.

OVER 20 YEARS OF R&D.
7.9 MILLION VEHICLES.
ONE PROVEN SYSTEM.

BYD has been developing plug-in hybrid technology for over two decades. The result is Dual Mode Technology - a system that has been refined across five generations to achieve the industry's highest engine thermal efficiency of 46.06%, meaning more of every drop of fuel is converted into motion rather than heat.

Electric-first

The electric motor handles all driving under typical daily conditions - no fuel burned, no emissions.

Seamless hybrid switching

The Xiaoyun Engine engages automatically and imperceptibly when additional power or range is needed.

Intelligent energy management

The EHS continuously optimises the split between motor and engine to minimise consumption at all times.

DUAL MODE OFF-ROAD

ENGINEERED FOR
WHERE ROADS END.

The BYD Shark 6 is built on the exclusive DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) platform - a body-on-frame chassis with a purpose-built off-road hybrid powertrain and reinforced suspension. It delivers the low-speed torque of an electric motor and the sustained power of a petrol engine, making it as capable in the wilderness as it is on the motorway.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

PHEVs VS. HEVs:

PHEV system diagram
PHEV - PLUG-IN HYBRID

LARGE BATTERY. PLUG IT IN.

PHEVs carry a large-capacity battery (10–20 kWh) that can be charged from an external power source - a home socket, workplace charger, or DC fast-charger. This enables up to 100 km of fully electric driving on a single charge, covering most daily commutes with zero fuel use.

10–20 kWh battery capacity
Up to 100 km electric-only range
Charges via plug or regenerative braking
DC fast charging support
Near-zero emissions for daily use
HEV system diagram
HEV - HYBRID ELECTRIC

SMALL BATTERY. NO PLUG.

Standard hybrids carry a much smaller battery - typically 1–2 kWh - that cannot be charged from an external source. The battery is replenished solely by regenerative braking and the engine. Electric-only range is limited to a few kilometres at low speeds; the engine runs most of the time.

1–2 kWh battery capacity
Very limited electric-only range
No external charging capability
Engine runs most of the time
Fuel savings versus pure ICE, but not vs PHEV

BUILT IN-HOUSE

THE CORE COMPONENTS
OF BYD PHEVs.

01

COMPONENT

HIGH EFFICIENCY XIAOYUN ENGINE

46.06% thermal efficiency - the highest in the industry.

BYD's Xiaoyun Engine is a compact, high-output petrol engine engineered specifically for hybrid operation. Its architecture minimises energy lost to heat, delivering peak power and torque while consuming far less fuel than a conventional engine at equivalent output.

Compact design optimised for hybrid integration
46.06% thermal efficiency - industry leading
Ultra-low fuel consumption at cruising speeds
Peak power and torque across the RPM range

02

COMPONENT

LARGE-CAPACITY BLADE BATTERY

More range. More safety. Longer life.

BYD PHEVs use an enlarged Blade Battery - the same lithium iron phosphate cell design that passes the nail penetration test without fire or explosion. Greater capacity means longer electric-only range, while LFP chemistry ensures over 3,000 charge cycles with minimal degradation.

Enhanced safety - passes nail penetration test
Structural strength from blade-cell architecture
Higher energy density for longer EV range
Lifecycle exceeding 3,000 charge cycles

03

COMPONENT

ELECTRIC HYBRID SYSTEM (EHS)

Dual motors. Intelligent control. Seamless switching.

The Electric Hybrid System integrates dual motors, dual controllers, hairpin-wound stators, and oil-cooling technology into a single compact powertrain unit. It orchestrates the engine and battery in real time - always choosing the most efficient configuration for the current driving condition.

Dual motors with dual electronic controllers
Hairpin winding for higher slot fill and efficiency
Oil-cooling technology for sustained performance
Intelligent real-time engine–motor coordination

PURE EV MODE

01

PURE EV MODE

Silent. Efficient. Zero emissions.

The electric motor drives the wheels exclusively - the petrol engine remains off. Regenerative braking captures kinetic energy and returns it to the Blade Battery. Ideal for city driving and daily commutes where the full electric range covers the journey.

HEV SERIES MODE

02

HEV SERIES MODE

Engine charges. Motor drives.

When the battery drops below a user-set charge level, the Xiaoyun Engine starts - but rather than driving the wheels directly, it acts as a generator, charging the Blade Battery while the electric motor continues to propel the vehicle. Quiet, efficient, and seamless.

HEV PARALLEL MODE

03

HEV PARALLEL MODE

All power. On demand.

Both the electric motor and the petrol engine drive the wheels simultaneously for maximum performance. At lower battery charge on the open road, the engine can also cruise independently at its optimal efficiency point, while the motor assists during acceleration.

ADVANCEMENTS.

FAST & CONVENIENT CHARGING

30% to 80% in just 35 minutes.

BYD PHEVs support DC fast charging alongside standard AC charging - giving you the flexibility to top up quickly on a long trip or charge overnight at home. The Blade Battery's chemistry handles rapid charging without the degradation risk of conventional lithium batteries.

VEHICLE TO LOAD

Your car as a power bank.

V2L (Vehicle to Load) lets you power external appliances directly from your car's battery - laptops, tools, camping equipment, or even home appliances during a power outage. A practical capability that turns your PHEV into a mobile energy source.

QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED.

A PHEV carries a large-capacity battery (10–20 kWh) that can be charged from an external power source - a home socket, workplace charger, or DC fast-charger - enabling up to 100 km of fully electric driving before the petrol engine is needed at all.

A PHEV's battery is far larger (10–20 kWh vs a HEV's typical 1–2 kWh) and can be charged externally via a plug. A standard HEV's smaller battery is replenished only by regenerative braking and the engine, and can't be plugged in - so its electric-only range is limited to a few kilometres at low speeds.

The BYD Shark 6 is available at BYD Pine Avenue in Lahore - built on BYD's exclusive DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) platform, a body-on-frame chassis with a purpose-built off-road hybrid powertrain.

The Xiaoyun Engine used in BYD PHEVs reaches 46.06% thermal efficiency - the highest in the industry - by minimising energy lost to heat while delivering peak power and torque.

Yes - the Blade Battery can be charged from a standard home socket, a workplace charger, or a DC fast-charger, on top of being topped up automatically via regenerative braking while driving.
